Why does the electric company make this sound when working on the lines?
Hi,
My local electric utility company has been bringing boom-lift trucks to a nearby power pole and lift an electrician to work on the power lines. They use loudspeakers to communicate from the top of the pole with the people on the ground. However, before talking, the loudspeaker emits a loud sound like a Morse code signal with varying frequencies and no pauses, then they say what they have to say through the loudspeaker. Sometimes, this Morse code-like sound is emitted without any talk afterwards. What is this sound for?

The utility I work for uses a radio system that has multiple towers to comunicate throughout the company. You actualy dial like using a phone to get to different towers in different areas. Sometime the towers and systems themselves "Dial Up" to relay information about their status etc. It sounds like the workers that you are seeing are doing "hotline" work. It is extremly important that they have communication with the spotter onthe ground so that they do not come in contact with energized primary with unprotected parts of the equipment or lineman. They may have decided that to negate any noise source in the area that they would use a loud speaker.
