Why do newly formed oranges drop off about 1/8" below the fruit?
I brought a 30" orange tree from New Orleans to Kansas and put it in a sunny bay window. It had 4 tiny oranges on it but in 3 weeks, they have all fallen off. It appears there might be something eating them off about 1/8" below the fruit. It may be the same thing that is eating holes in some of the leaves. Is there something we should be spraying the tree with or does anyone have any suggestions. We are wheat and milo farmers, not citrus farmers, but like the novelty of trying to grow oranges.
Most likely, the plants have not yet properly adjusted to your new location. Normally, potted citruses drop a lot of fruits. It is normal for container grown citruses to drop 98% of their fruits. When it has fruits on the trees, it only means that it is ready.
I grow more than 85 kinds of citruses, most of them in the ground and a few are in the pots.
I'd be interested to know the types of holes, how large those holes are, but most likely whatever made those holes have nothing to do with fruits falling off.
