WHAT IS THIS ENGINE NOISE! HELP!?
So I have a 1999 pontiac grand am 4Cly. with 174000 miles. When I go to start it up sometimes it makes this loud tractor noise from the engine area, not the exhaust. It mainly happens after it has been warmed up and driven, like I drive and hang at the mall or whatever for an hour or two then go to start it and it makes the loud annoying noise. It rarely happens when it is cold. When It does happen when it is cold it stops after driving for about 2min and all is quite. Also when the noise happens it seems like my power steering is going out and is hard to turn when parked and kinda makes a low winny sound. Lastly this may be unrelated but my car fluctuates between the middle and 3 points past in the temp. Gage. We got a new thermostat for that. If you have any opinions please I'm bagging you to leave your comments. thank you! Aaron from TN
ps- the radiator fan is always on, even when cold, even during winter mornings. weird
First, use Amzoil engine de-sludger to remove all traces of sludge and varnish deposits within your hydraulic lifters. Most cold start engine noises can be directly traced to this phenomena. Lifters are like miniature oil pumps. When they have enough decomposed engine oil in them, they rebel with noise. Swear off regular oils FOREVER! Begin using Mobil One 0W synthetic oil, designed for use in GM cars. Or use the newer Platinum series Pennzoil which cleans things out as you drive. Also, have your power steering system evaluated by a competent technician, making sure that you have the proper specification fluid in the system. Old, worn out steering fluid has lost it's viscosity and ability to do it's job correctly, and might be causing this rebellious noise. As far as the extra degrees in heat, go to a power wash, and clean the space between the radiator and the A/C condenser. This area collects and holds road debris, leaves, seedlings, and other contaminants that prevent even air flow around the vanes in your radiator, creating "hot" spots that may confuse sensors. Good Luck!!
