I have a gr.9 hw question about electricity ?? plz help me
?
Q.1) You require a high-current battery to start a large tractor. While shopping, should you be more concerned with the battery's rating of volts or amps ?
Q.2) A wire carrying more electrons will transfer more energy than a wire carrying fewer electrons. Is this statement accurate ?
Q.7) Describe how electricity gets from the generating plant to a appliance in your home ?
Q.8) Electricity flows into a hairdryer when it is plugged into a socekt. If electricity has been added to the hairdryer ,why doesn't it keep operating for a while after being unplugged ?
These are some of the questions i didn't really understand... I just need you guys to explain so i can kind of get an idea
1. High current ( Amps). Current is measure in Amps.
2. False. Energy ( power) is equal to volts multiplied by Amps.
So the energy is dependent on both the voltage and the current.
A high voltage with a low current can be used to transport the same energy as a low voltage with a high current etc.
7. At the generator plant, the force from the source of power produces alternating magnetic fields to apply a force on the electrons in the conductors ( wires). This causes the electrons to move down the wire, jumping from atom to atom.
This will only occur when the circuit is complete. This means that for each electron that is forced down the first wire heading out of the power plant, another electron must return on the second wire to complete the circuit.
Each atom has positive protons in the nucleus, and for each proton, there must be one negative electron to keep the charge equal to zero. +1 + -1 = 0
When the first electron is forced to move, it's charge forces neighboring electrons to get pushed out of the way as well, and on down the wire. It is sort of like water in a pipe. AIf you force water into one end of a pipe, water must exit the other side as a resut. Water is not compressable, so pressure on one end, instantly travels down the pipe and pushes on the other end. In this way, energy from the generator, is transferred down the wire to the load/motor/libht bulb etc.
It is almost like a direct connection as in a bicycle peddles and chain linking it to the rear gear.
Voltage from the generator is AC ( Alternatinc Current), which means that the voltage applied to the wire is positive, but then reduces to zero and goes negative, then returns to zero and continues positive again. This alternating cycle is what is used for power transmission.
Batteries on the other hand, are DC, Direct Current. This means the current ( electron flow) is always in the same direction. Where in AC, the current changes direction 120 times per second, which is 60Hz frequency..
8. Once the plug is removed from the power socket, electrons can no longer flow, so no more work can be done.
In the water pipe example, it would be as if you closed a water valve on the pipe. This would prevent the water force from the generator from moving the water in the pipe. Or in the bicycle example, it would be like you removed the chain. Force can no longer be transferred from the peddle to the rear gear/wheel. You have broken the circuit.
