Strange trailer light problem?

I just hooked up my trailer lights, using a new plug on the trailer. All seems to work fine individually, but when I turn on the headlights and press the brakes the trailer tail lights go out??
I haven't yet attached the trailer to the truck hitch - is this required to get a better ground?

you need to hook the triler to the hitch...that is the ground ... it should work then
