Does it take the same amount of power to move an electric car than it takes for a gas powered car?
for example: If it took X amount of power to make a 3000lb Gasoline powered car go 0-100 in 1320 feet would it take the same amount of power to make an Electric powered car go 0-100 in 1320 feet?
The answer to your question as phrased would probably indicate the electric would require more power, because today's practical electric car designs are heavier than gas cars due to 1/2 ton or so of batteries they carry.
Usually the question being posed is: What's the energy/power requirement to propel the vehicles?
As far as converting 'fuel' to propulsion power a conventional gas engine delivers about 19% of the potential energy contained in gasoline to the wheels, they generate more heat byproduct than horsepower, a hybrid car is more like 30% efficient, electric cars are rated 70% to 85% efficient, including battery charge losses. The big issue concerning electric cars that the critics bring up is the amount of pollution produced in the electricity generation process. A Virginia driver using almost 100% coal generated electricity may contribute more CO2 than a conventional car, while a California driver using mostly clean electricity sources will be a low net polluter.
An electric motor is quite efficient, delivering 100% toque starting at just over 0 rpm, the high performance Tesla requires no transmission, du to the motor's flat toque curve.
One power consumption figure I ran across, the fastest electric dragster, the Killacycle motorcycle's electricity consumption for a 1/4 run (and burn outs) is 0.6 kWh, worth $0.07 for each run (equiv. 2 oz gasoline)
