How much does it cost to replace piston rings in a car?
There's a 1997 Hyundai Elantra with 325,000 miles. They want to sell it for $300 and he said that all it needs is new piston rings and the transmission is fine. I test drove it and the manual shifts alright. Anyway, how much is it to replace piston rings, parts and labor?
I would offer $100. But before I would do that I would check with the scrap metal dealers to see what they would give you. You might have to drain all the fluids before they would take it and you might even have to bring it to them. Also check with auto salvage companies but I doubt they would pay much due to the mileage. In my opinion the car is not something you should even consider.
Why are you looking at $300 cars. You need to get someone that can help you make a sensible decision about buying a car! Just my opinion but it sounds like you might have been taken advantage of in the past without getting help when it is time to make decisions like this and possibly some other choices and directions you have chosen in the past.
