What are the backing clearances for a truck with trailer (backing from parallel path)?
Dock is parallel to service lane (not the usual perpendicular). Have limited area in front of dock bay. Driver will not be able to will not be able to drive forward to a spot in front of bay and back in). Driver must somehow kick trailer over left shoulder then kick tractor back to right to straighten into bay as back. My reference books fail me here. Can anyone point me to a reference for this?
I drove for 4 years and still own several large cars. Funny, but I couldn't tell you, in feet, the clearance necessary to spot a tractor/trailer, nor could I tell you where you can find this information. Allot of this answer has less to do with the feet required and more to do with the skill of the driver. I might spend 45 minutes and 50 attempts docking at this location when another driver would spot it on the first try. The correct answer for me may be 15' more room than a driver better/more experienced than I. Another LARGE factor is the tractor used. A single axel day cab can obviously get into a dock that a "Long Nose" Peterbuilt with a 60" sleeper couldn't even dream to go. So, is the freight long distance and would require a larger tractor or would a day cab be sufficient? And if that's not enough to consider; It is also not uncommon for a smaller tractor to be sent to load the trailer and deliver it to a yard, where it is swapped for a larger tractor for cross country delivery.
I (and most drivers could) tell you if it’s possible (again for me) to bump the dock if I looked at the area. I can however tell you the condition you describe does not sound as tight as some I have been in.
It is not that uncommon to have to "jack-knife" the trailer to the dock so that when the trailer doors are at the dock, the tractor must be at 90 degree angle to the trailer. This task is much easier if, when finished, the tractor is parked on the left side of the trailer. Completing this task with the tractor on the right side of the trailer is referred to as a "blind side dock" and the name speaks for itself.
If a 53' van will not fit, surely a 48" would.
