How do I move a large swarm of bees from a hollow concrete column to a bee hive.?
I have a square hollow column made of concrete blocks. Column is about 6 feet tall. Bees have taken up residence in the column which is roughly 10-inches square on the inside and have produced so much honey it's beginning to flow from a hole at the bottom of the column in the warm weather. The bees appear very docile and I would like to buy a starter bee hive kit and transfer the queen and her brood, then possibly retrieve the honey from the column. The bees are so plentiful now that thousands reside outside the column at night. Any ideas on how this can be accomplished. I'm assuming I'll need some sort of protective gear and a smoker to calm the bees.
I just watched a bee keeper do that. He used a box that he said was like a 5 star hotel for bees. It contained pheromones and other bee attractants inside. He was definitely wearing protective gear, including a face mask and a bee keeper uniform. He smoked the swarm of some 30,000 bees and the queen entered the first box. He used subsequent boxes after that until most of the hive was captured. He left the last box until after nightfall for the stragglers. I think you probably need professional help.
