What makes a truck a truck vs. a Car?
What aspect of the truck engine is it that makes a truck capable of pulling large amounts of weight vs cars? Is it all torque? If so, why? I understand that torque is a circular force but I don't understand how that translates into more pulling/pushing power in a tractor. I know it's not horsepower or else we'd see Dodge Vipers and Bugatti Veyrons pulling trailers around.
Torque is very important when it comes to hauling. I like to think of it as leverage.
For instance, if you are removing a bolt with a wrench that is 12 inches long, you have to use a set amount of energy (say 24 units of energy) to move the wrench. Now, if you were to put a pipe over the wrench that is 24 inches long, the amount of energy you need to exert to turn the wrench is more or less decreased by 50% (12 units of energy). The pipe gives you leverage or more power to move and you work less to do the same amount of work. An engine with 300hp but only 200 lb-ft of torque will have a much harder time pulling a large object than an engine with 275hp by 425 lb-ft of torque. The engine on the higher torque engine won't have to work as hard. Torque is the power of movement.
Here's a nice article that really explains Torque vs HP.

However, as far as car vs truck, it's also all about the vehicle frame itself. For instance, a truck is a body on frame design while most cars are unibody designs. The reason you don't see Dodge Vipers or Chevrolet Corvettes towing boats or trailers much (I've seen Camaro's towing stuff, but not super big.lol) is because the frames of the cars simply can't handle that much of a load. The engines themselves are perfectly fine for towing (Corvette engines have plenty of torque and horsepower) if you dropped a base Corvette engine in say a Chevy Tahoe, you could easily tow a good size boat. And even if you were able to tow a boat or trailer with a Dodge Viper, the stability you get with the body/frame design of a Silverado or F-150 would be gone. And like another answer mentioned even in the world of body on frame, there are different designs that lead to better towing ability. For instance a Toyota Tundra (current generation) can pull a trailer/boat faster than most other pickups (largest engine, more torque/horsepower), but only up to a certain point, once it hits that point it can't (safely at least) pull larger payloads, while the other pickups can continue to pull larger payloads because of the way their frames are designed.
