How do I use an electric chain saw sharpener, it's a Granberg G91?
It's probably pretty old, my brother gave it to me before he died and I forgot how he told me to use it. You hook it to a battery. I'm just not sure where to place the guide and grinder or what direction to go, and also, if I push it or if it goes automatically. I don't see an "off/on" button. Happy new year!
I own the same sharpener as you do, and truthfully, I used it this evening. It is not that hard to learn to use it with out the guide.
I never even put the guide own mine, and again to be truthful, I didn't spend a lot of time trying, but I couldn't figure out how to make the guide work to start with. Not that I am dim, but I was in a hurry to cut some wood before dark when I got it and that was 4 or 5 years ago.
Set the guide at 35 degrees and learn to eyeball that angle. Maybe every once in awhile stop and put the guide back up ther to make sure you are still close to 35* but the problem most people have sharpening chains is they sharpen all the teeth good but they get one side, for the sake of argument, lets just say 37* on one side of the chain and 33* on the other and it makes the saw cut crooked.
Another thing is there is several size chains, hold on a minute and let me go look.
I am laughing my butt off. I don't believe I typed that but I ain't taking it off, lol. I even have my wife a daughter laughing about it.
Anyway, I went and got the Bailey's catalog to check on the chain sizes and stones that fit each one.
5/32" stones fits the 1/4" chains.
3/16" fits the .325" chains.
7/32" fits .375" and .404" chains.
There should be a thumb switch in the wire about a foot from the grinder where you just spin a little wheel for it to come on or turn it off.
I ordered mine with a 120 volt transformer and hooker it up directly to it. If I go in the woods I sharpen 3 or 4 chains and carry them with me. That way I don't have to stop and sharpen, just change.
You can get the replacement stones from www.baileys-online.com .
They cost $1.49 each and a bag of 25 cost $29.75. Plus s&h of course. You gotta pay' em something extra for selling you someting, LOL. I bought a bag when I bough the shapener and still have more than half of them left and they have sharpened chains on several saws and the grinder is still getting it also.
As some one said, a file will do the job, but don't throw it away. I wouldn't take nothing for mine, except a grinder that uses
a 3/16" x 5- 5/8" wheel which I will need as soon as I finish my sawmill I am building. It has a 34" bar on it and I don't think I want to be setting there with this little toy, compared to the $300 sharpeners, and trying to sharpen 3 or 4 chains a day and I dam sure dont wont to be doing it with a file.
If you get over a 14" bar, you need a grinder of some sort if you are cutting any wood at all.
It's a simple fact. When the chain gets dull,
you work HARDER and SLOWER.
I would look into find i 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC transformer so you acn do as I do. I Have a 5 gallon bucket I sit in front of "MY CHAIR " lol, and sey the saw on it. My wife, daughter and I set there and watch TV and when the commercials come on I start grinding away.
I set there and sharpen several chains at a time and just stop when whatever program is on that we are watching. Just finger tighen the nuts so the bar stays on and go at it.
Just remember, try to keep both sides at 35 degrees and your guide will show you that.
